Christ is Supreme  Worship Him

Colossians 1: 13-18

The idea behind the book of Colossians is all about RIGHT BELIEVING will produce RIGHT LIVING. Colossians 1:15 states the importance of knowing the supremacy of Jesus.

IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING JESUS

John 17:3 states that “This is eternal life, that they may knowYou, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent”. The phrase “they may know” came from the Greek word ginōskōsin which means we know Jesus intimately. Intimacy with Jesus means to know what pleases HIM. This verse also states that Jesus Christ and God are both important. Christianity requires total allegiance to its head and founder (Jesus Christ). In Buddhism, if you take out Buddha, you can still follow Buddha’s teachings. In Islam religion, if you take out Muhamad, you can still follow Allah’s teaching. If we remove Jesus from Christianity, the whole belief collapses.

If we know that Jesus is supreme, we will worship Him. “Worship is the proper response to who God is and what He has done and continues to do in our lives”. The quality of our worship depends on our understanding of who God is. To worship Jesus is to make Him our Central and not as peripheral. Making Him as central means our life is focused on Jesus. We sometimes make Jesus as our Peripheral when we don’t know Him. We should respond to Jesus through worship. Worship is the opposite of Sin. When we sin, we make ourselves as the central – and Jesus becomes peripheral. To worship Jesus is to recognize and acknowledge Him to be the Lord of our life. We were made to worship God.

Colossians 1:13-14 states that “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins”. The word “redemption” (as written during the time of Jesus) means payment for the freedom of a slave. During the time of the Roman Empire, more than 50% of the population were slaves, and slaves can only be freed by due payment. “Forgiveness” (as written during the time of Jesus) means “cancellation of debts”. Jesus redeemed us from slavery of sin through His forgiveness.

Jesus’ supremacy is described in Colossians 1:15 – “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation”. The word “image” is described as “exact manifestation” which means that Jesus is the visible image of God. The word “firstborn” mentioned in this text has to do with “status” or “ranking” which means supreme. God revealed himself through His word and through Jesus. The problem of people nowadays is that they don’t know God. People often make assumptions of who God is by making their own image of God in their minds.

Jesus’ hierarchy can be seen during the time of creation. In Genesis 1:26, it states that “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” When God made man, He was talking to Jesus.

Jesus’s supremacy and equality to God can also be found in John 1:1-2 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God”. And in the same verse (John 1:14) – “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth”. God made himself visible by becoming man through Jesus. Jesus is the visible image of God.

Jesus’s supremacy cannot be explained by modern Science. And even modern Science still cannot explain how the universe was created and designed. Our universe has been intelligently designed by someone superior and intelligent. There is always a precision in God’s creation. The distance of the Earth from the Sun has to be precise in order for life to exist. A small difference in distance would mean disaster to living things. If the temperature of the Sun is higher than what it is now, Earth will burn, whereas if the temperature of the Sun is lower than what it is now, Earth will freeze. Earth’s rotation has to be precise (about 1000 miles/hour) that a small difference in speed will cause life to cease.

Jesus is also the head of the church. Colossians 1:18 states that “He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything”. The word “church” comes from the Greek word “Ekklisía” which means “called out people”. We are a called out people to be part and member of the church. We need to worship the head/leader of the church. When we worship Jesus, bring glory to the Lord and those who dwell in Him.

God has made and designed us, He knows what is good for us.If we want to live the fullness of our life, we should worship God. God gave us commandments to protect us. This means that we should accept all that is given to us by God.

To worship Jesus is to submit all of our nature to God. Worshiping is the process of nourishing our minds with His truth. To worship is to offer our hearts to His love. And to worship is to surrender to His purpose. If we want to make Jesus as the Center of our lives, we need to live a life of Worship.
