Are you living a life that is full? Is there a better life than the one you are living today?
The renowned Russian author Leo Tolstoy once asked these questions: “What is the meaning of life, and why should I live?” “If life inevitably ends in death, what is the purpose of living?” Tolstoy was one of the greatest and most influential authors of all time, yet even at the pinnacle of success he felt empty. He struggled to reconcile the reality of death and the purpose of life, and found no answer even amidst all his accomplishments. Like Tolstoy, many of us also live our lives is search for purpose and meaning. Sadly, we often pursue it by chasing after money, success, status, and other worldly passions, only to find that these could not really satisfy us. There is a void in our lives that no worldly success can fill, an emptiness and search for meaning that only God can answer.
So how can we live a life that is full? Last Sunday, Bro. Jun shared with us the 3 MUSTs for us to discover the fullness of life.
- We MUST KNOW Him. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). The Word was Jesus, He was with God before creation, He was God, and “All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being (John 1:3). To discover the fullness of life, we must know the very source of life – Jesus Christ. Through Him there is a light that has the power to dispel darkness, a light that can offer a full life to those who dwell in Him.
- We MUST RECEIVE Him. Jesus desires for us to live a life that is full, one that is spiritually abundant characterised by a deep, fulfilling relationship with Him. “There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him” (John 1: 6-7). Just as he sent John as the messenger announcing Jesus’ arrival, He often also sends messengers into our lives to lead us to Jesus, the true light. His desire is to bring us out of the darkness by making us realise that we are sinners in need of a saviour, and to bring us into the light by asking us to believe and receive Jesus’ free gift of salvation. To discover the fullness of life, we must receive Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, and begin our journey towards a deep, fulfilling relationship with Him.
- We MUST LIVE with Him. “For the Law was given to Moses; grace and truth were realised through Jesus Christ” (John 1: 17). The Law demanded justice, but God who is holy and gracious, sent His only Son Jesus to take all the punishment we deserve for our sins by dying for us on the cross. In receiving Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we also receive the gift of eternal life, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Life no longer inevitably ends in death, and we can find new purpose as live eternally with Christ and grow in our relationship with Him. And what a privilege it is to live surrounded by His glory “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1: 14). What a joy it is to live in His presence and purpose, “One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord And to meditate in His temple” (Psalm 27: 4).
To live a life that is full starts with knowing, believing, and receiving Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. Through Him, death is no longer the end, and we find new purpose and meaning as we grow in His presence and in our relationship with Him.
