Christ is Supreme: Live and Share His Truth
Colossians 2: 1-10

Have you come to a point where you believe what is truly worth believing? Right believing means right living. There are so many people in this world who underestimate the power of what we believe. One of the ways to gauge what we believe is to observe our everyday lives. What is truly worth believing is the truth of Christ, and the truth of Christ is that He is supreme
These days, we hear about fake news. These fake news cause doubt in what we think we know and what we think we believe in. They are meant to stir or to shake what we believe in or what we think we know. In Genesis 3:1-5 when the serpent was tempting Eve, we realize that Satan’s fake news in the Garden of Eden is exactly the same fake news that we hear today – (1) you can be god in your life, you are in charge (verse 5), (2) it is up to you what is good and what is evil, you are the judge (verse 5), (3) there is no consequence, you will not die so you can do whatever you want (verse 4). Just like Eve, when our belief system and knowledge of what we believe are shaken, even we ourselves begin to adulterate it. So how do we counter fake news? Christ should be supreme in our lives. Because if He truly is, then we will naturally live and begin to share His truth.
In his letter to the Colossians 2:1-10, the reason Paul was struggling is because the early Christians were facing challenges to their faith – heresy, unbiblical truth, and false belief systems which were on the one hand, trying to add what was true about Christ and on the other hand, seeking to take away from the truth. Paul wants to encourage believers that since Christ is supreme, whatever situation we are in today does not change the fact that He is supreme and in control. Christ is also supreme in love and so we are knit together in His love. If we have His love, we are able to love Him in return and love others unconditionally. Because Christ is supreme, we are fully assured that Christ dwells within us. The more we know of Jesus, the more we are in awe of Him, the more we joyfully obey Him, and the more we fall in love with Him. This is what Paul wanted to see in the lives of these early believers.
In verse 4, Paul used the words discipline and stability, which are descriptive of an army. While we do have individual responsibilities to be anchored on the truth of Christ through His Word, we also have a responsibility to one another. We need to stand firm together on our faith. This world is not lacking in anti-biblical thinking such as the lure of worldliness and materialism. Hence, we need to help one another stand on the sure foundation that is Jesus Christ. As we received Christ by faith, we need to live by faith and stand on His declarations, His character, His attributes. We are being transformed every day to be more like Christ. Even though we are different in our levels of maturity in our faith, we can help one another to grow, to mature, and to be steadfast in our faith. We can come to one another’s rescue and speak truth in Christ. That is why it is so important to be part of a small group. And it does not stop there, we need to share the truth to others who do not know Christ and start our own small group. It is also our responsibility to not be seduced by lies of the world. The truth is, we need to see Jesus through spiritual eyes. It is spiritual discernment which has nothing to do with intellect. It is by the grace of God that we know Jesus. Some of us may be filling our emptiness with things, with affirmation from people. But the truth is only Jesus can complete us. Jesus Christ, who is our salvation, strength, shepherd, security, hope, truth, wisdom, provider, healer, transformer, eternal God, Bridegroom, Soon and Coming King, He is much more than that.
These are some examples of fake news and the corresponding truth that negate them:
FAKE NEWS: All religions are the same. They can all lead you to heaven.
TRUTH: Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”
FAKE NEWS: Faith in Christ is good, but you still need to do certain things to be saved.
TRUTH: Romans 10:4 “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”
FAKE NEWS: There is no need for Christ, just be a good person and that is enough to get you to heaven.
TRUTH: John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me”
FAKE NEWS: This is my life and I am in charge. I can make it on my own. I am the captain of my ship and the master of my destiny. If it is to be, it is up to me.
TRUTH: John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit for apart from Me you can do nothing”
At the end of the day, all these fake news will be exposed to be untrue. The truth is all about Christ.
It is so important to know the truth because Jesus said the truth will set you free. Will you share it?
